![]() ![]() ![]() Everything else about the wheels are great and they look fantastic on my car. This advice came from the metallurgist and also the guy that is going to rebuild my wheels.Īs I said earlier, the wheel company has been more than helpful and Dave has bent over backwards to help and even found the wheel tech here in Australia to fix the wheel, which is covered by a 3 year warranty. Therefore, the best spokes to use for a wire wheel are the chromed steel type. The better grade to use would be Austenetic 400 series but is not as readily available. The S/S typically used is Martencitic 316 or similar. The trade off is the metal loses its ductile and elasticity properties and makes it more brittle. The reason being it increases the rigidity and helps make them more 'stain' proof. After speaking with a metallurgist, he explained that wheel spokes made of S/S are hardened to within an inch of their life. I opted for stainless as I was under the impression this is the best material for wire wheels. ![]() He was more than helpful but disagreed about the brittleness of the spokes as he said they only use top quality stainless for the spokes. I contacted the wheel maker and told him of my findings. The wheels have done approximately 4000 miles. After inspecting the broken end of the spoke, the exposed metal looked to be crystallised and brittle. The spokes are stainless steel as are the nipples. I havent had any issues with spokes rubbing holes in the tubes but I have recently experienced broken spokes. They run tubes but also everything is sealed on the inside where the spokes are with a black type of silicon which acts like a liner. I have a set of aftermarket wire wheels bought from a company in California on my '61. The estimated cost for lacing and truing a wheel is $164.40 per wheel plus the cost of the nipples(using your supplied spokes).ġ962 Thunderbird Convertible with Dealer Installed SR Package? The estimated cost per nipple is $2.34 each. Your nipple sample has arrived and we do have a matching. BTW I sent a nipple to these guys to verify they have a match. Well, with some research I have found a company that can supply just the nipples or can rebuild your wheels completely. Jim Wulf and myself had discussed trying to find just the spoke nipples and rebuilding the wheels ourselves. On my wheels the hub and rim chrome is still in excellent shape just the nipples are rusting and flaking. The wheels and hubs were chrome plated carbon steel with the spokes being stainless steel and spoke nipples chrome plates carbon steel. Guys, many of us have the Kelsey Hayes 48 spoke wheels that came with the 62-63 Sport Roadsters or could be purchased directly from Ford during that time. ![]()
